Falls & MLG

Landing a long fall without taking damage: which bucket works where, why being on fire costs you your powder snow, and how Emma does it on her own.

Water BucketWater BucketWater bucket

Place water on the block you are about to land on, just before you hit it. Landing in water cancels the fall damage. Pick it back up with the empty bucket.

Works in: Overworld and the End. Not the Nether: water evaporates there the moment you place it, and the bucket is still emptied.

Powder Snow BucketPowder Snow BucketPowder snow bucket

Works the same way, and you sink in instead of splashing. Scoop it back up with an empty bucket.

Works in: Everywhere, the Nether included.

The catch: Powder snow puts out fire, and a burning player or mob that is put out breaks the snow it is standing in. So if you are on fire when you land, the fire goes out and your snow is gone: you can't pick it back up.

CobblestoneCobblestoneA block under your feet

Over the End void or over lava, Emma places a block 1 to 4 blocks under her as she falls so she lands on it.

Works in: Any dimension, for lava. The End, for the void.

How Emma does it

  • Emma reacts once she is falling faster than 0.7 blocks a tick, about 4 blocks into a fall. She works out where she will land from her speed, holds sneak for the whole fall, and clicks when her feet are within 4.5 blocks of the ground.
  • She grabs powder snow first, then a water bucket. With no bucket at all she eats chorus fruit to teleport out of the fall. Buckets in her Endless Inventory count too.
  • After landing she picks the water or snow back up, giving up after 10 tries or once she is 8 blocks away.
  • When she plans a route with a long drop, she only counts on a water bucket outside the Nether. Without a bucket she plans drops of 3 blocks at most, with one up to 20.
  • In hero mode she keeps 2 to 5 water buckets and 2 to 5 powder snow buckets, plus leather boots so she can walk out of powder snow.
  • When she catches fire on the ground without Fire Resistance, she puts powder snow at her feet: it puts the fire out in one click and breaks itself doing it, and it works in the Nether where water can't.

From Emma's fall-save code. The water and fire rules are read from Minecraft 26.3.
